Schetz (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State U.-Blacksburg) and Bowersox (Texas A&M U.-College Station) present a textbook for courses in viscous fluid flow at high Reynolds numbers for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate engineering students. Students are assumed to have completed at least one general undergraduate course in fluid mechanics and one in mathematics with partial differential equations, and to be computer literate. The emphasis is on flows of engineering interest, so turbulent flows receive primary coverage. Another major theme is the transfer of momentum, heat and mass, which are so closely connected that a unified concurrent treatment seemed best. No date is cited for the first edition, but the second includes a new chapter introducing the numerical solution of high-Reynolds-number viscous flow problems using the full Navier-Stokes equations rather than invoking the boundary layer approximation.
