This volume is based on the premise that the specificities of urban locality play a determinative role in migration experiences. Editors Schiller (social anthropology, U. of Manchester, UK) and Çaglar (sociology and social anthropology, Central European U., Hungary) note, for example, that it should be obvious that "migrant settlement and transnational connection in denigrated provincial cities would differ from that in urban centers with worldwide reputation as desirable places to live." In order to address this neglected aspect of migration research they bring together scholars of urban sociospatiality and the neoliberal restructuring of cities with ethnographers focused on migrants' settlement and transnationality in order to examine case studies of cities in the United States, Europe, and Africa that address how migrants' transnationalism is shaped by the global contexts of particular cities and particular places and institutions within those cities.
