Schironi has performed a Herculean task in her study of the end markers on papyri of Greek hexametric poetry. Working with fragments often only a few centimeters across, she has determined how the close of one book and the opening of another were marked, if at all. The great majority of the material is from Homer and originated in Egypt, most likely the Alexandrian schools. The study covers the time from the second century BCE to the sixth century CE. Schironi notes the difficulty of looking up references in a scroll and discusses the transition from scroll to codex.
