Using interviews with 79 law and MBA students and observations over a period of four years, Schleef (sociology, U. of Mary Washington) argues that these "elites-in-training" first challenge, then eventually accept, their "dominant positions in society." She considers the significance of professional ideology, how social class and Bourdieu's concept of habitus affects the students' decisions about attending school, their changing views of skills acquired through school, the concepts of cultural and social capital, social responsibility, and finally, how they accepted jobs of "least resistance"--prestigious positions they once avoided. The book is based on her dissertation. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
