Noting that scholarship often is not translated into educational practice, Schneider examines how it becomes common knowledge in educational settings using the examples of Bloom's taxonomy, multiple intelligences, the project method, and Direct Instruction, to see what characterizes these ideas to impact their adoption and what these characteristics reveal about the nature of US education and connecting research to practice. He explains how four characteristics--perceived significance, philosophical compatibility, the ease of putting an idea into immediate use, and transportability--are necessary and how they occurred in the four instances, ending with an examination of ideas that were not implemented in practice: the Taxonomy of Educational Objectives for the Affective Domain, triarchic theory, generative learning, and the behavior analysis model.
