Schneiderman advocates for open technical standards, which he defines as any standard available for public use that is developed and maintained through a collaborative process and that provides or creates an opportunity for interoperability or harmonization between products or devices, and is acceptable to most people who design products and devices. Within that context, he describes how standards are developed, disseminated, and either accepted or rejected. Among his topics are smart grid takes on critical standards challenges, developing a standard for electrical trace heating, wireless chargers become a standards battle zone, the vehicle "black box" gets its own standard, and Internet of Things/M2M as a standards work in progress.
