This book integrates natural and constructed wetlands, and sustainable drainage techniques into traditional water and wastewater systems used to treat surface runoff and associated diffuse pollution. Chapters 1 to 5 introduce water quality management, and water and wastewater treatment fundamentals to the inexperienced reader. Chapters 6 to 11 review preliminary and predominantly primary treatment units that can be combined with wetland systems. Chapters 12 to 18 summarize predominantly secondary but also tertiary treatment technologies that can be used in combination with wetland technologies or as alternatives in cases where land availability is restricted due to costs. Usually non-essential traditional technologies are briefly presented in Chapters 19 and 20. Microbiological and disinfection issues relevant for treatment wetlands are covered in Chapters 21 and 22. Chapter 23 highlights sludge treatment and disposal options that should be considered for sludges from wetland systems. Chapters 24 to 31 focus predominantly on timely research case studies related to constructed wetlands and associated technologies applied for runoff and diffuse pollution treatment. All studies are referenced with recent and relevant high impact journal papers. The final chapters are written for professionals and students interested in detailed design, process, management, water quality control and modelling issues.

* Contains a comprehensive collection of timely, novel and innovative research case studies in the area of wetland systems applied for the treatment of urban runoff

* Demonstrates to practitioners how natural and constructed wetland systems can be integrated into traditional wastewater systems, which are predominantly applied for the treatment of surface runoff and diffuse pollution

* Assesses the design, operation, management and water treatment performance of sustainable urban drainage systems including constructed wetlands
