In this reader, the editors (both of the School of Management and Labor Relations, Rutgers U.) present 21 papers that collectively provide an overview of the current state of strategic human resources management. Opening papers lay out the general contours of the field and are linked in the common understanding of the links between people and the firm and their emphasis on the competitive advantage to be gained by the strategic management of human resources. Seven papers than examine global dimensions of strategic human resource management and include specific discussions of practices in Europe, India, and China. Four articles address the question of "strategy to action" or, in other words, the factors that condition how people are linked to the firm, includnig management values, firm structure, technology, knowledge intensity, legal and regulatory conditions, demographics, degree of unionization, and nature of the investment community. The final group of papers explores issues related to the role of the human resources department and human resource professionals in strategic human resource management.
