From Possibility to Success

Schwarz (education, National Louis U.) presents practices, processes, and tools for teaching diverse learners in the inclusive classroom. Each chapter offers a tool, the rationale for using it, and success stories. They involve Universal Design for Learning, differentiated instruction, and individual accommodation lesson plans; an interests/favorites inventory; a student dream inventory; teaching/family/counselor talking points for identifying student dreams; promoting student leadership, self-advocacy, decision making, and self-determination; group work; supporting student needs within the classroom community; developing a student presence map in the school and wider communities; a three-day unit on understanding and embracing learner diversity; and a student priorities/action plan.
