The very structure of Plato's philosophic dialogues, in which Plato himself rarely appears as a character, pose a special challenge to those who wish to understand the Greek philosopher's meaning and intent. In this volume, Scott (philosophy, Loyola College) presents ten papers that explore the philosophical implications of Plato's dialogic devices. For example, examination of the narrative role of the character of Socrates in five of the Platonic dialogues is argued to reveal a greater emphasis on the emotions than is typically assumed and the use of images in the dialogues is argued to demonstrate that Plato saw vision as an essential part of philosophical activity necessitated by human limitation.
