She then describes the controversies over the Dhammakaya Temple's beliefs and practices and places them within the contexts of the Asian economic crisis of the late 1990s and ongoing arguments over the commercialization of Buddhism, the marketing of Buddhism as a product for consumption, and the effects of consumerism on contemporary Thai society.
