Scott (religious studies, U. of Tennessee) explores changing Thai Buddhist beliefs concerning wealth and piety through an examination of the controversies that erupted over the fundraising practices of the Dhammakaya Temple, which preaches a doctrine of social and personal prosperity connected to Theravada practices of meditation and merit-making. She examines the history of Buddhist beliefs about wealth. She then describes the controversies over the Dhammakaya Temple's beliefs and practices and places them within the contexts of the Asian economic crisis of the late 1990s and ongoing arguments over the commercialization of Buddhism, the marketing of Buddhism as a product for consumption, and the effects of consumerism on contemporary Thai society.
