In this collection, 17 revised papers from the Imperial War Museum first international conference held in October of 1998 are presented, which contain analyses of the activities of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) organization, active from 1940-1946 as part of the UK's Second World War secret services. The de-classification of many of its papers beginning in the 1990s makes a detailed study possible. The articles cover the SOE's involvement in countries such as Denmark, Afghanistan, Italy, Romania, Albania, and topics such as weapons and equipment, Churchill, resistance, and the use of disinformation. The book is aimed at students of history, intelligence studies, and special operations, and general readers. Seaman, who organized the conference, is a historian with the Cabinet Office and former historian with the Imperial War Museum. Contributors are historians and researchers from the museum, SOE, and universities in Europe and the US. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
