Given that as much as 90 percent of U.S. archaeology is carried out in the field of cultural resource management (CRM), the effects of CRM work on the archaeological record, the archaeological profession, and the heritage of the American people is hard to overemphasize. This book examines unresolved problems in CRM archaeology including the development of trust between all of the entities involved in CRM archaeology; the management of archaeologists' information in ways that promote the best management of archaeological resources; and the degree to which inclusion of a site on the National Register of Historic Places should affect whether that site is investigated or ignored. By suggesting solutions as well as pointing out problems, contributors hope to facilitate discussions that will make CRM projects and programs yield better archaeology and better public policy.
