In his investigation of productive systems and their relation to development, Garcia (economics, U. of Murcia, Spain) adopts a structural, interdisciplinary, and holistic view that attempts to account for the social nature of economic actors, the importance of historical and geographical aspects, and the relational character of socio-economic institutions. From this perspective, "the whole set of related actors constituting diverse economic systems at regional level make particular structures" that can be compared over time through explanation of the composition and relations maintained in the structures. He does this by employing a methodology comparable to social network analysis in order to identify and characterize the main production systems in Andalusia and the Basque Country (representing the lowest and highest levels of regional development in Spain) using several network measures, input-output indices, and regional historical information.
