Sempruch (women's studies, Queen's University) discusses the use of the image of the witch in feminist, second-wave feminist and post feminist writing over the past 30 years. She sees the witch as first a symbol of the wise woman, marginalized by male centered culture, then a metaphor for the Other in society. Using examples from North America and Europe, Sempruch notes that there is no longer one agreed upon use of the witch figure. The witch is interpreted differently according to the culture of the feminist writer. The sense of witch as disrupter of order and usurper of power is contrasted with the witch as a mother lost to her daughters, two of many interpretations. Semprech concludes with the hope that this study will encourage further communication among the heterogeneous communities of feminist scholars.
