Sharma (comparative religion, McGill U.) and contributors work through a "hermeneutic of surprise" as they describe their research into the roles and treatment of women in Indic religions. For example, a woman has a role in Vedic Srauta rituals as the "Sacrificer's Wife," where the word for "wife" can be translated to mean "female master." In addition, the presence of fairies in Tibetan Buddhism can indicate a certain attention to and admiration of the female, while occasions of goddess worship or festivals inspired by goddesses seem to elevate the status of women, however briefly, and may lead to an underlying interpretation of women as worthy of salvation. The contributors have found such surprises in close readings of rituals, liturgy, and other sources, and each offers references for further study.
