Shefer-Mossensohn (Middle Easter history, Tel Aviv U.) explores the world of medicine in the Ottoman Empire of the 15th to 17th centuries, with a focus on the core area of the Ottoman world--i.e., the Balkans and Anatolia as far as the Sivas-Kayseri area (which is located in what is now central Turkey)--with occasional reference to the Arab provinces. The treatment, which examines Ottoman medicines and the experiences of illness, explicitly positions its topic as embedded in society and culture. Chapters discuss treatment as symbolic and instrumental intervention in relation to etiquette, treatment style, and therapeutic objectives; the integrative and holistic nature of the Ottoman approach to healing; medical charity and the social order; and the physical setting of hospitals in the early modern period and what it reveals about attitudes towards diseases.
