This volume collects 16 papers from an interdisciplinary symposium in which scholars from the fields of history, historical archaeology, art history, anthropology, art history, philology, geography, literary studies, material culture, economic history, and social history explored intersections between material history, cultural identity, and geography in three distinct but interrelated regions: the West Indies, Carolina low-country, and Chesapeake Tidewater. The first section of the collection has been titled "Materializing Regional Identity" by editor Shields (English and history, U. of South Carolina) and includes such topics as hurricanes and the built environments in South Carolina and the West Indies, the diversity of Anglican Churches in the three regions, colonial castles and the architecture of social control, and ritual and the material culture of West Indian politics. The second half is titled "Locating Urbanity" and includes studies of domestic material culture and consumer demand in colonial South Carolina, the archaeological signature of 18th century Charleston, and the domestic spaces of the American Revolution in Charleston.
