Shoshan (general history and Middle East studies, Ben Gurion U. of the Negev) subjects Tabari's (838-923 CE) classic work Ta'rikh al-rusul wa'l-muluk (The History of Prophets and Kings) to the techniques of modern criticism. He is not as concerned as previous scholars with what can be embraced or rejected as factual--any actual past events behind the text--but with the narrative itself. First he explores tropes of mimesis, chronology as a flexible matter, theology and ideology as history, and Tabari's voice and hand. Then he focuses on four passages to illustrate his approach: the Saqifa account, Uthman's murder, the Battle of Siffin, and Hysayn's martyrdom. He does not expect readers to know Arabic.
