The first paperback printing of this 1987 textbook for students of behavioral sciences examines the transition between childhood and adulthood, and argues that the social challenges and stress adolescents feel is not necessary for the development of maturity and self-image. Simmons (psychiatry and sociology, U. of Pittsburgh) and Blyth (youth development, U. of Minnesota) explain that the physical changes of puberty may not be as disruptive to an adolescent's self-esteem as the transition to large and structured middle schools and high schools, and that the timing of these two events is unfortunate. The authors base most of their findings on interviews with 621 children over the course of five years, using mostly quantitative research methods and statistical analyses to interpret the data.
