This volume grew out of a course on Law, Tourism, and the State taught by the authors at Flinders U. of South Australia. It is a critical examination of "how law thinks about tourism (and vice versa)" and not a text that examines the specific ways in which law regulates tourism per se. In other words, they seek to connect law to the broad array of social forces and relations that are involved in thinking about tourism, including mobility, mobilization of resources, economic ideologies, culture, the sex trade, and terrorism. Key themes include the way law's focus on the tourist as individual hides the way that tourism constructs itself and how the apparent lack of specific law regulating tourism obscures the way tourism and its related mobilities are regulated through discourse that is internalized by tourists, host populations, and others involved in the tourist industry.
