Milton's masterwork, which he considered better than Paradise Lost, details the temptation of Jesus by Satan in the first 40 days of Jesus's ministry. It is magnificent, of course, but studied much less often than other works in the Miltonian canon. Simpson (English, Thompson Rivers U.) makes up for that lack in this treatment of the work as a form of literary ecclesiology, noting that the subtleties of Milton's approach may have caused confusion previous to his study. He describes how Milton uses the text to continue in his critique of the English Reformation and what he felt was inconsistent theology. Simpson finds signs that Milton's concept of the church as a textual community, each of whom were guided by the Holy Spirit in the reading of the Word, a state Simpson sees in Milton's work about regaining the salvation through Christ that was lost by Adam and Eve.
