This research-based curriculum aims to improve the social skills of students with mild to moderate disabilities. It focuses on helping children learn the cognitive skills behind social behaviors rather than teaching them a specific set of behaviors to enact. Along with a general overview, it provides 66 activity-based lessons on social skills organized around topics like emotional and behavioral regulation, social cues, problem solving, and making and keeping friends. Handouts, illustrations, and sample newsletters accompany the lessons. Siperstein teaches social development and education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston; Rickards is affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
