Pericles , one of the Bard's least performed and most disliked plays, is discussed in this collection of works by the likes of Ben Jonson, Algernon Swinburne, Janet Adelman, and Jack Kroll in 36 essays divided into two sections: Pericles and the critics, and Pericles on stage. Skeele introduces the volume, indicating that no matter how popular the play was in its time, it has not only pitted critic against audience and critic against critic, but has divided critics within themselves, extolling the play's virtues and denouncing its failings. Ben Jonson was one of the first to be angered at the popularity of the tale, especially among those vulgar masses. Jonson called Pericles a "mouldy tale" and wrote: "If they [the public] love lees, and leave the lusty wine, envy them not, their palate's with the swine." Neither index, bibliography, nor contributor notes are anywhere to be found. This is one of 12 Garland critical editions on the Shake's plays and sonnets. Annotation c.
