Chicago-based architects Smith and Gill present a vision of how Chicago can increase its future sustainability by upgrading and re-purposing existing buildings, and how the city can limit its contributions to the causes of climate change. The plan is not a "checklist" but rather a holistic proposal to augment the environmental, economic, and qualitative aspects of Chicago city life, and is aimed at reducing carbon emissions of downtown Chicago while simultaneously creating a vibrant urban environment. The plan's eight strategies focus on buildings, the urban matrix, mobility, smart infrastructure, water, waste, community engagement, and energy. Also included are a parametric model, funding discussion, and implementation strategy. Although Chicago-specific, the proposal could be adapted to other cities and corporate, university, and medical campuses. The volume is illustrated with full-color and b&w photographs and diagrams. No subject index has been provided. Oversize: 9.5x9.5". Distributed in North America by ACC Distribution. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
