Taking part in a combined ethnographic and archaeological research project awarded to Washington State University, anthropologist Smith (1913-99) reviews regional ethnographies, studied park records, and interviewed tribal elders to gather information on the Native People who used the Mount Rainier area during living memory. In 1963, before a scheduled archaeological survey began, he completed his Ethnographic Guide to the Archaeology of Mt.
