Soeters (organization studies, Netherlands Defence Academy and Tilburg U.) and Van der Meulen (Netherlands Defence Academy) published a 1999 book titled Managing Diversity in the armed Forces (Tilburg U. Press); the present work seems to be based on the earlier book, with substantial revisions and updates. Thirteen contributions examine how armed forces around the world react to cultural diversity in their ranks, with an emphasis on the importance of diversity in ethnicity and gender. Fourteen countries are considered in separate chapters: the US, Canada, Bolivia and Ecuador, Brazil, South Africa, India, Eritrea, Israel, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Sexual orientation is also addressed in several of the chapters, and language, religion, class, caste, and region are treated in some. Contributors are scholars of psychology, sociology, anthropology, and other fields and are based in the studied countries. The book is aimed at students of minority studies, military sociology, gender, and political science. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
