Many say religion can never be defined from the perspective of natural or social sciences, and Sommerville (emeritus history, U. of Florida) agrees that at least it would be very difficult. He does not try to define the thing itself, but constructs a definition of the word, offering a nominal definition rather than real or referential definition. Once that is nailed down, or at least corralled in some cognitive enclosure, he says, then the meanings of spiritual and secular can be hunted down. He considers such aspects as the growing confusion over religion and spirituality, why religion and education challenge each other, religion and the law, science and reductionism, and religion and theologies at odds.
