Before his time in prison in 1792-97, Lafayette played a prominent political and military role in the service of democratic struggles on both sides of the Atlantic, says Spalding (religion, Illinois College, Jacksonville), and afterward was an exile and gentleman-farmer who continued to exercise influence mostly behind the scenes. He explains that because of his prominence, Lafayette's captivity is perhaps the best documented in the era. His narrative includes such stages as the prison road into Prussia, loosening prison bonds, escape, secret communications, nodes in the net, Bonaparte, and release.
