In his introduction Spencer (postcolonial literature and culture, U. of Manchester, UK) explains that students of world literature are necessarily students of the literary voices arising in response to the imperialism of the past several centuries. He also explains his use of the word cosmopolitan in the title (it's not just for the alliteration), as follows: "...it does important work that is not performed by the more commonly used term `international': that is, it forecasts a form of community beyond rather than between existing nation states." His study delves into defining the cosmopolitan novel, competing cosmopolitanisms, cosmopolitan criticism, Yeats and the idea of late style, J.M. Coetzee and the "War on Terror," reading The Satanic Verses, and Timothy Mo's The Redundancy of Courage. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
