Those familiar with the authors' screening tools for social-emotional competence (the ASQ and the ASQ:SE) are aware of their popularity among professionals in early intervention and early childhood special education for infants, toddlers and preschool-age children. Squires (education, U. of Oregon) and Bricker (early intervention, emerita, U. of Oregon) have designed this as a five-step tool in which professionals screen the child for behaviors of concern and evaluate the family environment, perform detailed assessment of the child and caregiver competence, work with caregivers on goal development, embed intervention strategies into everyday routine and conduct evaluation. The authors have designed the tool to integrate into existing programs while considering the three age groups separately. They provide case studies, reproducible screening and assessment instruments.
