Karluk One, an ancient Alutiiq community built at the mouth of the salmon-rich Karluk River, is unlike any other archaeological site in Alaska’s Kodiak Archipelago. For 600 years Alutiiq people built houses at the mouth of river, and their settlement created a massive mound of cultural debris. Fresh water from a nearby pond seeped through the deposit and preserved a vast array of fragile artifacts. Working together, researchers and community members recovered more than 26,000 items, many made of wood, bone, ivory, baleen, antler, fiber?even leather?before the meandering river shifted and washed the site away.

For more than 30 years the beautifully preserved artifacts have fueled the Kodiak Alutiiq heritage movement. No other collection has figured so centrally in returning Alutiiq history to community awareness or promoting an accurate view of the richness of Kodiak’s Native past. Kal’unek? From Karluk explores the 600-year-old site and its contents to build a picture of prehistoric Alutiiq life. Richly illustrated, the book also features essays by community members and scholars as well as a ground-breaking glossary of Alutiiq terms developed for the artifacts by Kodiak Alutiiq speakers.
