Based on senior author Sternberg's triarchic theory of human intelligence, this text for a course in educational psychology integrates questions designed to encourage analytical, creative, and practical thinking, and gives examples of analytical, creative, and practical solutions for everyday classroom challenges. Emphasis is on diversity, with guidelines for providing support for gifted students and those with disabilities, and a chapter devoted to educational implications of socioeconomic, cultural, gender, and linguistic diversity. Sections cover on human development, human diversity, thinking and learning and memory, motivation and instruction, and assessment. Of special interest are interviews with expert teachers, learning activities for understanding constructivism, and debates on contested educational issues. Other pedagogical features include chapter outlines and overviews, key terms and concepts, and questions and problems grouped by elementary, middle, and high school settings. Color photos and illustrations are also included. This second edition is updated to reflect current advances and research in the field. Sternberg teaches psychology and education at Tufts University. Williams teaches in the Department of Human Development at Cornell University. Merrill is an imprint of Pearson. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
