The 96 prints featured in this lovely volume (it's oversize, at 9x12.5") are in the collection of Scott Skinner, founder of the Drachen Foundation, which is devoted to kite studies. The introduction by Stevenson (a historian affiliated with the Foundation) provides a background to Japan's history in the Edo and Meiji periods and describes the history of the use of kites there. The remainder of the volume contains full-page and some foldout double-page color plates of superb quality, each accompanied by lengthy descriptive entries describing the print's content. All of the prints contain images of kites, occasionally as the sole subject, but more often as part of the scenes of daily life typical of Japanese woodblock prints. Most of the prints date from the 19th century. Distributed in the US by the U. of Washington Press. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
