Stoney (cardiac and thoracic surgery, Vanderbilt University, emeritus) spent several years conducting interviews with cardiac surgeons who conducted breakthrough procedures. Most of these men are unknown outside of the field but their work has meant that innumerable people, from blue babies to heart attack victims have been given a second chance at life. Stoney prefaces his transcript of the interviews with a history of cardiac surgery, starting in 1896. He pays tribute to surgeons he was unable to meet, including the only two women in the study, as well as outlining the technological developments that allowed the procedures to succeed. The interviews, themselves, are not technical but the stories of the early lives of these pioneers, their influences, (often other interviewees) and the conditions under which they worked. They speak about the future of the field, managed health care and give advice for those considering entering the field. Each transcript is accompanied by a photo of the surgeon and a bibliography of work by and about him. The book is accessible to the general reader and, in a trade paper format, could well find an interested lay audience. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
