Strebe, a veteran teacher and educational consultant, offers a method for engaging whole classrooms of math students, which can be used in grades K-12. He has successfully used the method, based on cooperative teams of two to five students, with all levels of students, from learning disabled to advanced placement, at both inner city and suburban schools. He describes the first days of class in detail, with ideas for teaching students to do worksheets cooperatively, then looks at how to review material for a test and how to use quiz answers in a collaborative way. Various team builders are included, as well as several ways to reengage students whose minds are wandering. With ideas to help students remain engaged for longer time periods, this book is especially helpful for teachers instructing in a block schedule. The book includes reproducible exercise sheets, and reproducible expressions of the cooperative classroom's basic philosophy (you are unique and valuable), for posting on the classroom walls. There is no subject index. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
