Seminar students of Stromseth's (international law, Georgetown U.), many now in law practice, explore a series of case studies within a common framework. For each they examine the history of the conflict and the atrocities that occurred, the legal and political context in the country, the goals and mechanisms of accountability that were pursued, the particular relationship between national and international approaches and between different types of accountability mechanisms, and the extent to which the mechanisms chosen were effective in overcoming obstacles and meeting key goals. Among their case studies are Yugoslavia, Cambodia, Argentina and El Salvador, and Japan's foreign comfort women during World War II. A professor also treats East Timor and Indonesia.
