This text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics and computer science assumes no prior knowledge of molecular biology beyond the high school level; however, students should have prior college-level courses in discrete mathematics and algorithms. The text introduces algorithmic techniques used in bioinformatics (the study of biology through computer modeling), and illustrates each algorithm with detailed examples. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to molecular biology, and subsequent chapters cover different application domains of bioinformatics. Some chapter topics include sequence similarity, suffix trees, methods for aligning multiple biological sequences and genomes, algorithms for searching biological databases, and methods used in population genetics. Chapter exercises are included, and supplemental material can be found on a web site. Sung is affiliated with the National University of Singapore. ^^^^ Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
