Sutton (historical and critical studies, Glasgow School of Art) takes the concept of cinema and photographs as frozen moments in time and inverts it. Using the theories of Badiou, Teilhard de Chardin and particularly Deluze, Sutton examines recent films that distort time, such as The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as well as the older work of Andy Warhol among others. Rather than placing cinema in opposition to still photography, he joins them in his understanding of the immanence of the forms. Sutton also explores how digital photography has altered and sharpened the sense of immanence and how, combined with the Internet, has become a paradigm-changing event.
