Curious about the reasons for Ireland's phenomenal economic success in the 1990s, the author of this book set out to interview seven diverse individuals in order to gain their views of the reasons for Ireland's turnaround. The figures interviewed are Bertie Ahern, Taoiseach (Prime Minister) from 1997 to 2008; Peter Sutherland, chair of both BP, the oil multinational, and Goldman Sachs International; David Begg, General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions; Frances Ruane, Director of the Economic and Social Research Institute; Gary McGann, CEO of the Irish multinational, Smurfit Kappa; Joe Macri, a foreign direct investor; and Olivia O'Leary, an Irish broadcaster and writer. Following the interviews, the author summarizes the overall conclusions of his interviewees and other economists and draws his own conclusions on the building blocks of prosperity.
