Journalist and author Taylor uses many of the diaries and memoirs of Nazi leaders to tell the stories of two men charged with creating and maintaining the infrastructure of the Third Reich: Fritz Todt and Albert Speer. He approaches the two men differently. Todt's part in the construction of the Autobahn is the main thrust of his biography, along with his pragmatic view of Germany's chances in the war. Speer intrigues Taylor more, perhaps because he survived both the war and the court at Nuremberg. Speer also was involved in the secret rocket experiments and the race to develop an atomic bomb. While he quotes copiously from Speer's memoirs, Taylor believes that they are largely whitewashed versions of his own crimes. The book is filled with photographs and schematics and will interest the many who are still fascinated by the inner workings of Hitler's Germany.
