This is a study of the elite politics of China for the period 1972-1976 that is intended by authors Teiwes (emeritus, Chinese politics, U. of Sydney, Australia) and Sun (Chinese studies, Monash U., Australia) as the first of three-volume study of the transition from revolution through restoration toward reform through 1982. The study describes the continuing dominance of Chairman Mao in his waning years and shows how his shifting attitudes towards such figures as Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping were determinative of power and policy. By showing how the Chinese political elite maneuvered around the central figure of Mao during this period, it also helps set the stage for explaining the conflicts that emerged in the wake of his death.
