In 2009 the European Court of Human Rights ruled against display of crucifixes in Italian public school classrooms and 16 months later overruled that decision. The papers in this volume use that case as a point of departure. Grouped by theme, they discuss judges and religious symbols (such as the role of judges in determining the meaning of religious symbols, the Strasbourg Court and Article 9 of the European Convention of Human Rights); symbols, education, indoctrination, and proselytism (including freedom of religion v. freedom from religion); state neutrality and religious symbols; comparative perspectives (Canada and the US); and some specifics pertaining to the Lautsi case itself. Editor Temperman (public international law, Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands) provides the introduction and one of the 16 articles; contributors represent the fields of political science, law, religion, and human rights. Martinus Nijhoff is an imprint of Brill. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
