Coroners occasionally face extreme challenges when attempting to perform autopsies on corpses that arrive in less than perfect condition: charring, decomposition, and mummification can make it impossible to conduct an autopsy. Some religious beliefs and constraints can have the same effect. However, a virtopsy (virtual autopsy) is a minimally invasive alternative that can produce an efficient autopsy. The range of technologies employed in virtopsies include computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, and 3D photogrammetry and surface scanning. This reference provides a comprehensive summary of the procedure which includes enough detail to be useful for practitioners new to the field and includes numerous well-explained images and illustrations. The book was edited by Thali (Forensic Institute and Center for Forensic Imaging, U. of Bern), Dirnhofer (emeritus, legal medicine), Vock (radiology, U. of Bern), and includes contributions from 27 co-authors.
