From the Institute of Medicine's Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, this report describes how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change to meet the shifting needs of an aging, more diverse population and respond to a complex, evolving health care system that aims to be safe, high-quality, patient-centered, and equitable. The report contends that an expanded workforce of nurses, who will serve an increasing number of insured patients, will require changes and improvements in scopes of practice, education, nursing practice, the use of nurses across settings, and leadership, so that nurses can be full partners in health care. It makes recommendations for changes in public and institutional policies at the US national, state, and local levels in these areas, as well as a need for better data on the health care workforce. The accompanying CD contains the complete report and summaries of the 2009 Forums on the Future of Nursing for acute care, care in the community, and education.
