Three Neolithic sites in Dumfries in Southeastern Scotland were the subject of excavations between 1994 and 1998. In this report Thomas (arts, histories, and cultures, University of Manchester) draws together the reports of the digs, emphasizing the evidence for non-residential structures at the sites. These vary from henges to stone structures to buildings that may have been ritually burned. While this was the impetus for the dig, no aspect of the society is ignored in the study. There are professional reports on each find, its composition and placement at the site. A left leather sole of a Roman shoe is thoroughly catalogued and tentatively dated. Biological samples of seeds, pollen, leaves and wood are tested to determine climate. There are studies on the soil and radio-carbon dating. The reports are individual objects are more detailed than in most studies of this sort. Present and future students of Neolithic culture will appreciate the careful work done here.
