Thompson (education, Claremont Graduate School, California) collected information using a questionnaire that was filled out by 271 African American high school seniors from seven high schools in five different school districts in southern California. The questionnaire assessed the students' home and school experiences from elementary through high school. Thompson presents the results of her research in the form of short summaries of the students' lives (often with long quotes by the student) grouped into elementary, middle, and high school experiences; teachers, course work, homework; and issues of school safety, racism, and plans for college.
