Thompson explores the work of Marcus Garvey, George S. Schuyler, Claude McKay, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright and others to locate what Thompson believes is fascist ideology within the mantle of radicalism and the longing for revolution in the 1930s. He finds no indication such authors belonged to fascist organizations or wanted to do so, but that they used what they felt would work within generic fascism to elicit responses that would create change. Thompson closely critiques the works of Garvey and other leading intellectuals, finding examples of fascist thought within such works as McKay's account of the Harlem Riot of 1935, Hurston's Tell My Horse and Wright's The Outsider.
