Are female offenders more likely to receive psychiatric treatment than similar male offenders? Are African-American offenders less likely to be psychiatrically treated than are non-African Americans? Thompson (sociology, Portland State University) studies the role of race, gender, and social class in predicting psychiatric treatment for felony defendants. She hypothesizes that because authority figures believe that criminal behavior in African-Americans in 'normal,' African-American offenders are treated differently than white offenders. To test these expectations, the study analyzes demographic, criminal, familial, and psychiatric data on felony defendants in Hennepin County, Minnesota. An introductory chapter overviews aspects of the mental health and criminal justice systems, and theories of gender, race, mental illness, and criminal labeling. Chapter review and research questions are included. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
