Thompson, visiting professor of broadcast journalism at Birmingham City University, offers a UK-centric writing guide to written and spoken journalistic English for broadcasting, for broadcast journalists at any stage of their careers. Many of the examples used in the book come from BBC News, where the author has held senior editorial positions. The guide explains how to tailor writing to specific audiences, how to convert agency copy into spoken English, and how to avoid newspaper-style journalese. Coverage includes good spoken English, the language of broadcast news, writing broadcast news scripts (with examples), different techniques for radio and television, and writing online news (new to this second edition). The guide focuses on writing for broadcast and does not cover TV, radio, or online planning and production. An appendix lists easily confused words, clichés, words to avoid for politically correct reasons, and Americanized phrases to avoid. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
